梅雨の晴れ間が見えることもあるが概して梅雨空が続いている。梅雨はまだまだ終わらない。でも高校野球の地方大会も開幕を控えており、梅雨明けも近い。

“Provided (that) / providing (that)”は「ただし…ならば、ただし…を条件とする」の意味で使うが、単に接続詞とされる場合と、「非人称独立分詞構文」と呼ばれることもある。

 

この「非人称独立分詞構文」には他にも“assuming (that)”, “considering (that)”, “given (that)”や“granted (that)”などあり、高校等の英文法では詳しく触れられなかったように思う。

 

しかし、いずれの表現もビジネス文書ではしばしば使われ、また分詞構文により英文に歯切れの良さを付加するものであり、今回以下に取り上げる。

Assuming (that):

You use assuming or assuming that when you are considering a possible situation or event, so that you can think about the consequences.

大意「…と仮定して、…とすれば、と言う場合にassuming (that)…を使う。」

 

Considering (that):

You use considering that to indicate that you are thinking about a particular fact when making a judgment or giving an opinion.

大意「…であることを考えると、…を思えば、と言う場合にconsidering (that)…を使う。」

 

Given (that):

If you say given that something is the case, you mean taking that fact into account.

大意「…であることを考慮すると、…と仮定すると、と言う場合にgiven (that)…を使う。」

 

Granted (that):

You use granted or granted that at the beginning of a clause to say that something is true, before you make a comment on it.

大意「仮に…だとしても、…であったにせよ、と言う場合granted (that)…を使う。」

 

Provided (that):

If you say that something will happen provided or provided that something else happens, you mean that the first thing will happen only if the second thing also happen.

大意「ただし…ならば、ただし…を条件とする、と言う場合provided (that)…を使う。」

Assuming that it rains tomorrow, what should I do?

「明日雨が降ったらどうしよう？」

 

Considering that you are no longer involved with that man, your response is a little extreme.

「あの人ともはや付き合ってないことを考えると、君の反応はちょっと過激だよ。」

Given that she’s inexperienced, she has done well.

「未経験だということを考えると、彼女はよくやったよ。」

 

Granted that you are right, we still can’t approve of you.

「仮に君の言う通りだとしても、我々は依然として君には賛成できない。」

 

I will go, provided that the weather is clear.

「天気さえ良ければ行きます。」
