Talking About DIFFERENCE 異文化交流してみると

Talking with people from another nationalities, the topic of conversation is often about differences. It means difference about our cultures, habits, meals, and so on. I think it's a sensitive topic but sometimes we talk about political problems of our countries. Especially among international students -like me, it seems to be important, not just for a speaking English but we can learn a lot of things we didn't know before.

We don't know what they think about, how do they feel, what are good manners, and what makes them happy or sad. We know only a surface, so that New Zealand's Sushi ia such a different one...!!
Anyway, this is not just a joke, but it's a good example.
Yes, we can call it Sushi, but in our common sense, it's a littele bit strange. When we think about Sushi, the first thing come think aboout is "Fish", and next "Shape" as you know Maki, Nigiri, Sashimi...etc. In New Zealand, there are lots of Sushi restaurants, but they have only Salmon and Tuna. I've never seen another one!! I think this is common here, but, let me say 

"This is not Sushi. It's completely different. But so yummy!!"

...I love it anyway.

Now I'm on a different topic, so I'll be back on the topic of differences.

Having a conversation about difference is good for our understanding because we know only superficial information about other countries. For me, talking with friends from another nationalities is quite interesting.
On the other day, the Wi-Fi in our house was broken and stopped, so I had a good conversation with my flat mates, because we had nothing to do else.... but it was actually pretty nice time, esppecially, talking about food was so exciting. 

One guy had ever eaten foiegras -good liver in French, it's so expensive!!-, the other guy had eaten ostrich, and take Dongyoung, he is my old cassmate, had ever eaten meat of dogs. I had never known that we can eat dogs in Korea, and it sounds so strange, otherwise I just want to try it someday.

During the conversation, I realized that to talk about our own country is easy, but it was interesting for others. If I talk about Japan, it's just

"Do you know Sushi? Is it? no no no ! It's NZ's Sushi!! Sushi is actually..."

…like this way.

It is easy, because It's usual for me.

I talk just about Japanese common, but for others, it's uncommon. 

That's why I'm sure that they will listen carefuly.

Now, I'm full of passion about talking with someone while I'm writing such sentence...alone....

さて本文にもありますが、実際僕たちが異文化交流をする際、僕たち留学生や外国人同士では、しばしばお互いの違いについての話になることがあります。文化の違い、生活の違い、考え方の違いなど、お題は様々ですが、実はこれがとても興味深い(*‘ω‘ *)

とくに話を簡単には膨らませれない(会話に慣れていない)留学生同士の会話ではこれはとても良い材料となります。

うちの国ではこうなんだけど、あなたの国ではどうなの？
って聞くだけですからね。非常にとっかかりが付きやすいですし、話せば話すほど面白いです。
僕自身もフラット(ニュージーランドにおけるシェアハウスのこと)時代、フラットメイトといっぱいこの「違い」についての会話をしました。
例えば韓国人は犬を食べますし、日本人の僕はクジラを食べたことがありますし、オーストラリアではカンガルーを、フランスではキャビアやフォアグラが有名、香港から来た子はサソリを食べたことがあると言っていました。みんなして食べるものがいろいろすぎて
「え！？ どんな味どんな味？？」
って話になり、慣れない英語で頑張って説明したのもいい思い出。この説明をする、という会話だけでも英語を話すきっかけとなり会話力の向上につながります。
ちなみにサソリはカニみたいな味ではあるものの無いに等しく、とにかく歯ごたえがあって噛み切りにくいものだそう(笑)別に美味しくはないそうです。
本文に登場する元クラスメイトで、フラットメイトでもあったドンヨンは犬の味について

「なんか、なんとも言えない味でさ。犬、って味なんだよ。あとすんごい硬かったな。でもさ、犬って普段僕たち飼ってるじゃん…それをさ、殺して食べるんだよ…。考えたら僕、それがすごく悲しくなって！…悲しくてそれ以降食べれなかったよ！！」
と
「I was so sad!!!!」
を連発してました(笑)

そんな話を聞いた僕ですが機会があればトライしてみようと思います。

実はニュージーランド、特にオークランドでは「日本食」は簡単に見つけることができます。意外と日本の食材も値は張りますが、ジャパンマート(通称ジャパマ)に行けば手に入れることができ、特に寿司は現地の人たちから人気な料理の一つです。
なんでも気軽に持ち運べるサイズ感(実は、寿司はパックに入れられた状態で売られていて、店頭で買ってお持ち帰りするのが主流です)と、ヘルシーなのが人気のヒミツなんだとか。
本文でも言及しておりますが、こちらでは違う形で発展して根付いており、形状は寿司、と呼べるものの…なんとも微妙な心境になるネタばかりです。
特に、魚のネタは9割サーモン、たまにツナ、みたいな(笑)
イメージとしては

某回転寿司店で並んでいる子供向けメニューが大幅グレードアップした

と言う感じでしょうか。さらにニュージーランドで一般的に食されるアボカドを足して、創作寿司化されています。
僕は舌がおこちゃまで、回転寿司に行くとまず納豆巻き！かっぱ巻き！！たまご！！！ハマチ！ハマチ！！ハマチッ！！！！...たまに赤ダシという人間なので、なんにせよこれはこれで大好きです。
