There is one thing I need you to know in reading passages in English when taking English reading exams.
英語の読解力の試験を受ける時、英語の文章を読む際に一つ理解しておいていただきたいことがあります。
This is particularly an important point.
特に重要な点です。
For example, in my last article, there were passages as below:
例えば、前回の記事（リンク）に、以下の文章が出てきました。
"The first Qin emperor, Qin Shi Huangdi, like many tyrants before and since, viewed men of learning and their writings as a threat to his power.”
「Qinの初代皇帝、Qin Shi Huangdiは、彼の先にも後にも存在した暴君の例に漏れず、学者や彼らの著作を自分の権力への脅威と捉えていました。」
“He therefore organized a slaughter of scholars, and burned any and all academic texts he could get his hands on. In fact, the Shih Ching did not escape this fate. - all copies then in existence were also burned to ash.”
「そういう理由で、彼は、学識者の殺戮（殺すこと）を指揮し、手当たり次第に学術書のありとあらゆる全てを焼き尽くしたのです。事実、Shih Chingはこの運命を免（まぬか）れませんでした。当時あったShih Chingすべても、灰になったのです。」
*取り上げている固有名詞は、この記事の意図上わざともとの単語に置き換えております。
Within these passages, there are words "Qin," "Qin Shi Huangdi," and "Shih Ching." Notice first that they are proper nouns with the first letter capitalized. You many not know what "Qin" or "Shih Ching." Do not bother to know what they are in your own languages or how to pronounce them. Nor be intimidated by not knowing them or give up understanding the rest of the texts. Read through as they are.
これらの文章の中に、"Qin"、 "Qin Shi Huangdi"、 や "Shih Ching" といった言葉が出てきます。まず、頭文字が大文字になった固有名詞であるという事に気づいてください。"Qin" や ”Shih Ching" が何か分からないかもしれません。それらが母国語で何だろうとか、どう発音するのだろうとか、気を使ってはいけません。また、知らないことで怖気づいたり、他の文章を理解することを諦めてしまってはいけません。書かれたとおりに読み過ごすことです。
*Qin=>チン、Qin Shi Huangdi=>チンシファンティ、Shih Ching=>シーチン（グ）と発音します。
The purpose of reading English texts in reading comprehension exams is to answer correctly. The point is not to translate nor pronounce the texts. The point is to understand the idea of the material. You do not need to know what "Qin" or "Shih Ching" are or how to pronounce them in choosing the correct answer.
読解力テストの文章を読む目的は、正解をすることです。和訳や音読をしないことがポイントです。文章に書かれた内容を把握することがポイントなのです。正解を選ぶのに、"Qin" や "Shih Ching" が何か、どう読むかを知らなくていいのです。
Whatever the contents of the exam texts may be, the exams are testing your English reading ability not detailed knowledge on the contents.
試験の文章の内容が何であれ、試験は英語読解力を試しているのであって、内容に関する詳細な知識を試しているのではありません。
Although I translate those words into Japanese, translation is not necessary when taking exams nor you would have time to be distracted by the details.
私は和訳をしますが、試験の時は和訳は必要ではありませんし、詳細に気を取られている時間もないでしょう。
Therefore, read the questions and answer choices first and find out what piece of information is required and choose the best answer.
ですから、設問と回答の選択肢をまず読み、どんな情報が必要とされているのかを知り、ベストの選択肢を選ぶことです。
If you really want to find out what those words are, you can always look them up after the exams.
