The leaders of Washington and Beijing held marathon phone talks on Thursday,... in what was their first direct conversation in four months amid escalating tensions over Taiwan.
According to the White House,... the call between President Joe Biden and his Chinese counterpart lasted for over two hours.
It added that Biden told Xi that America's policy on Taiwan remains unchanged.
It also said that there were a range of global issues such as climate change and health security among other agenda items discussed between the two leaders.
According to China's state-run media,... Xi highlighted during the call that the U.S. should abide by the "one-China principle."
Xi also emphasized that Beijing strongly opposes Taiwan's independence and interference from external forces.
It quoted Xi as saying that "those who play with fire will only get burnt,"... warning of repercussions should U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi visit Taiwan.
The call comes amid increased tensions between the two superpowers over the possibility of a trip to Taiwan by Pelosi.
And while such a trip has not yet been made official,... Pelosi reportedly has spoken to other members of Congress about joining her in the coming weeks for what would be the first visit in 25 years by a U.S. House Speaker to Taipei.

Nations protests in the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s turbulent northeastern region, in attacks UN chief Antonio Guterres said could constitute a ‘war crime’.
Protests erupted on Monday as crowds took to the streets of North Kivu province’s main city Goma against the country’s UN mission – United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO) – which they accuse of failing to stop armed groups’ decades-old fighting.

On April 28, 1967, boxing champ Muhammad Ali refused induction in the army, saying: "My conscience won’t let me go shoot my brother or some poor hungry people in the mud for big powerful America."
Ali was convicted two months later, sentenced to 5 years in prison and banned from boxing for 3 years. He appealed and, in 1971, the Supreme Court overturned his conviction.
