A short but sweet interview with Yoshiki of XJapan
Yoshiki and X Japan have been making quite a splash on the international scene recently. In between touring around the world, inspiring undying devotion before a show in New York city by delivering hot chocolate to freezing fans chocolate at 3am, and being featured in the new Stan Lee comic “Blood Red Dragon,” Yoshiki took the time to sit down with us at AnimeCentral in Chicago and answer a few questions.

Did you ever wonder why he chose to auction off his beloved piano or how X Japan came to record the theme song for the animated movie “Buddha”? Read and find out the answers to those questions and more in our exclusive interview!

MadHatter: It was announced that you will have a song in the full length animated film “Buddha” based off the manga of the same name. Why did you decide to do a song for this movie?

Yoshiki: Well the director of animation is a friend of mine and he was talking about it. “We are creating Buddha,” he said, “I want you to write a theme song.” This was before they started creating the animation. I thought it was interesting, so I told him to let me see it when he was finished with animation. He showed me in the middle of making it… it was beautiful; the story was amazing. This [Buddha] is the creation of Osamu Tezuka He’s like the GOD of animation. Well actually, I was going to get involved with Astro Boy; I was going to do the theme song, but I had to have my neck surgery at the time so I couldn’t do it. So I was talking to Kodakowa Shoten animation company. Even though I couldn’t work on Astro Boy, I was excited to work on his other masterpiece.

MadHatter: What is the one goal you want to accomplish this year?

Yoshiki: One goal?

MadHatter: Yes, one goal.

Yoshiki: Ok, one goal! Release the album, X JAPAN’s new album, here in the states.

MadHatter: Shortly after the disaster in Japan, you put your piano on auction to raise money for your home

country. What made you choose your most prized possession?

Yoshiki: Ok, So ... First it was very shocking event, and it’s still ongoing. So we wanted to do something in support. I thought it [auctioning the piano] would catch a lot people’s attention. This kind of disaster is terrible. At that moment, the world was watching and paying attention, but then people forget. But still there’s a problem, so I did an auction for my piano. I wanted for people to be aware of the disaster. Also, at the same time, I wanted to raise money for the victims. So that’s really why I decided to auction my piano.

MadHatter: Will you design a new one?

Yoshiki: Sure. *Laughs* Actually this tour I was going to use a black piano. And actually, I was just talking about two days ago in Los Angeles and randomly said, “So there’s this black piano, well maybe...” and they said, “So why don’t you try to find or create a crystal piano.” So, I’m thinking about it at this moment.

MadHatter: Last year you said you didn’t get to try the Chicago pizza, so did you try it yet

Yoshiki: *Laughs* No, not yet. Maybe I will try it tonight. Actually this is like my fourth time coming back here.

MadHatter: So, you have to try the pizza! *Laughs* Please give us a message for fans?
