非常に根強いものがある。初期のARCをフェノメノール・ギアだと云った人がいるが、
信じられないほどの、まさしく驚異的で不思議なギアだと思う。
出会ったその日から魔法のような中高域に感銘を受け続けています。
SP-8は鮮度の高いクリアーなサウンドを描き出し、ある種の壮絶さがあり、

素晴らしく臨場感があり、躍動感があってエモーショナルなサウンドである。

タイトで引き締まった低域、叩きつけるような凄まじいダイナミクス、

バススラム。ソリッドでシャープなエッジを強く効かせてくる。

ARCの音は点描画的で、音の微粒子を散りばめたようにフワッとした

音場が広がっていく、音のエッジはキチッと決まるが、

やや角が立ちすぎるところがある。ボーカルや楽器に焦点が定まらず、

実在感のある音とは言いかねる。HIGH DEFINITION (高精細)と

初代モデルから印字されているが、細部描写は潰れる。

アメリカンサウンドの粗削りなところや、定位感の悪さ、ソフトフォーカスで、

ディティールの曖昧さは気になる。録音現場の再現性は苦手としている。

その場の雰囲気や空気感は感じ取りにくい。多幸感のあるサウンドは他にはなく、

好ましく感じる人も多いのだが、それが音質のある側面を覆い隠してしまって

いる事についても言及しなければなりません。audio researchのプリの特質は、

ボリュームの位置があるレベルから上になると非常にしなやかに、
滑らかで躍動感のある音になるんです。逆にあるレベルから下がると
ノンリニアに聴こえてしまう。つまりスレッショルドレベルがあって、
そこから上に上がると音は格段に活き活きとしてきます。

ARCでは10時から2時までのボリューム位置で良い音で鳴るように設計している。

ARCは音楽ジャンルを選ばないという印象で、音がうるさい、

ギラつくという欠点もありますが、シンセサイザーでつくった

現代的なデジタルサウンドの再現性にも抜群に優れている点を追記したい。
 

 

 

ARCの初代モデルである 名機 audio research SP-3はSP-8とほぼ同じ音だが、

audio research SP-3 か SP-10がaudio researchの最高傑作プリアンプとされている。

SP-8はベイビーSP-10と呼ばれ、SP-10をワンボックスにしたような製品で故障もない。

SP-3は黄金時代のアメリカンサウンドで、SP-8よりゴージャスな輝きや煌びやかさが

より強く、ヴァイオリンの弦や女性ボーカルもより艶やかでARCトーンが強調される。

空間にフワリと漂うアンビエンスのニュアンスがより多くなり好ましく感じる。

SP-3は年式が10年古くなるので、解像度では落ちるのだが、比較すると音の勢いがあり、

張り倒されそうな音の強さを感じる。高域もSP-8よりキツくなり耳に刺さる。

SP-8は特性的に正常進化しており、音を聴いて好きなモデルを選べばいいだろう。

ただ猛烈なパワー感とARCサウンドの強烈な魅力という点では、SP-3がベストだろう。

SP-10 SP-11は故障が多く、再修理を5～6回食らったそうなので購入は止めた方が良い。

直しても直してもいつまでも安心できないし、DCオフセットでパワーアンプに

ダメージを与えてしまう可能性もある。その場合真空管パワーアンプを使うだろうから、

アウトプット・トランスで直流は吸収されるのでスピーカーにダメージはない。

加えて電源電圧のレギュレーター用にメタルキャンタイプトランジスターを多数使っており、

入手不可能で修理不可に陥る場合すらある。ARCがピークの頃の全盛時代の魅力をそなえた

ARCプリは、ソリッドステート機のSP-5以外、SP-3 SP-6 SP-8 SP-10 ならどれを選んでも

間違いないが、ハイブリッドSP-9からはS/N比や解像度は上がったが、分析的になり過ぎて、

音も薄くなり、発売当時のアメリカでも賛否両論が真っ二つに分かれ大論争になった。

SP-8は真空管8本、SP-10はオールチューブ構成で15本使用で静粛性を保つのが困難だった。

時間の経過と共に、静かだったバックグラウンドに「サー」という盛大なノイズが増える

という出来事は、オールチューブ式 ARCセパレート機を使った人は全員経験があると思う。

SP-8との組み合わせを想定していた、当時のARC (audio research corporation) の

開発用スピーカーは、比較的能率の低い ACOUSTAT,APOGEE,THIEL,MAGNEPAN,

INFINITY,DUNTECH などですが、ARCのSP-3,SP-8,SP-10などは、

ALTECやJBLのスピーカーやALTECのパワーアンプと非常に相性が良い。

audio research SP-8 当時の製品はCD入力がなくPHONO PREとして

レコード再生が主な用途だった。左側の V1 V2 V3 は12AX7でPHONOのミニチュア管、

右上のV4 V5 V6がLINEのMT管で、V6が6DJ8/ECC88/6922 V4 V5は12AX7/ECC83、

ヒーター電圧は直流で球交換した時は調整が必要になる。V7は12BH7Aだ。

 

 

 

オーディオリサーチのプリアンプとパワーアンプを使用していて「サーッ」という盛大な

サイズが発生している場合、または「サー」というノイズが途中から大幅に増えた場合、

ミニチュア管をひとつずつ交換していくと大抵解決する。「ブー...ジジジ..」という

断続的に入るハム音は家電製品の電源をオフにしていく、エアコンのインバーターが

経年で弱ってノイズの発生源になったりするので、エアコンやPCなどノイズ源になりそうな

家電製品や電化製品のコンセントをノイズフィルタータップから取るようにすると

解決する。ARC製品は真空管の消耗や、球の相性問題、家の電源の汚染やアンプの電源の

取り方によって発生する不具合が殆んどである。ARCは安易に修理に出さず、

修理に出す前にとにかく色々とトラブルシューティング・試行錯誤することが大切である。

それとARCのような古いアンプを安定させる為にはとにかく毎日使う事が大切である。
