明るい音色で爽やかな鮮度感の高まりがあり、非常に音楽性の高いユニット。
決然としたHi-Fi感を誇示しながら、クリーンで冴えた音は手放しで気持ちが良かった。

ピンポイントな音像定位の良さと、左右、高さ、奥行きの3次元に広がる

音場空間の豊かさがある。S/N比が高く、暖かさは後退したが、

力強い音を持ち、かつての豪華さや賑やかな雰囲気もよく保たれている。
高域はやや硬く好みが分かれるが、FET(電界効果トランジスタ)と
わずか一本の真空管で構成されたハイブリッド真空管プリアンプで、
SP-8と非常によく似た音を完成させた。ビル・ジョンソン氏の説明によれば
「初期の真空管ユニットよりも優れた」ハイブリッド設計を考案する為に、
トランジスタ、そして最終的にはFETを用いた数多くの実験の集大成である。

高度な設計思想を持つARCの製品造りに唸らされる。
真空管はラインとフォノステージにそれぞれ一本しか使用していない。

ビル・ジョンソン氏の見解では最高の音質を持つミニチュア管は12AX7で、

良い球が入手困難になってからは6DJ8が最も優れているとの信念を持っている。

真空管を十分吟味しなければ、酷く薄っぺらな低音に愕然となる。

推奨管は 双三極管 Amperex 6DJ8で、単管でLRch増幅の為、双極マッチ+-10％

以内の球を使用する事が望ましい。球を吟味して使ってもまだ低域は不足しており、
分厚い低音を持つスピーカーでバランスが良好に保たれるだろう。

CAT SL-1ULTIMATEと比べると解像度では劣り、ごく微妙ながら質感が

低いのが残念だが、現代ハイエンドスピーカー、パワーアンプにも十分対応しえる
高性能と大切な初期ARCサウンドの魅力を着実に継承しており、
現在も陳腐化を免れており、高い存在価値を発揮している。

筐体の重量はSP-8の約半分しかなく、巧みにコストカットしているが、
かつて問題視された盛大なノイズやチャンネルの不均衡、歪み率を
大きく低減し、ハンドリングの煩雑さ、具体的には時間経過による
ノイズ増大での球の交換や、音が出るまでの長さ...etc
音の解像度やフォーカスの問題も改善され、飛躍的に進化した製品である。
audio research SP-9MK2は電源を入れてすぐに音が出る。
ハイブリッドの銘機 SP-11(1985年)をワンボックスに凝縮した戦略モデルで、
全世界で高い人気を誇り、シリーズ累計で7,000台以上を売り上げている。
ドラマティックで非常に感動的な音を持つ素晴らしいプリアンプで、

A very musical unit with a bright tone and a refreshing increase in freshness.
