Charlir Rose - Roger Rosenblatt & Stanley Fish
Rosenblatt: I like plain writing, restrained writing. And writing that depends on the strength of the noun. A lot of writers talk about the strength of the verb, the strength of adjective, etc. The reason I like the noun is that Emerson called that the speaking language of things. And I try to teach my writing students that if you find a right noun, you won't need three adjectives to describe it. If you need three adjectvies to describe it, you probably got the wrong noun. So there are a lot of little things in it and eventually I go wide in the book as you know, but certain particular small things; anticipation over surprise, invention over imagination, things like that. That makes good writing.
