今年も国公立大学の２次試験が終わった。早速あちこちの予備校などが問題や解答速報を公開している。便利な時代になったものである。

 

今年の京大の英作文は例年通りの指定された日本文の英訳だった。「自分の無知を悟ることこそが学びである」という歯ごたえのある趣旨の日本語である。

Ⅲ．次の文章を英訳しなさい。

 

かつての自分の無知と愚かさを恥じることはよくあるが、それは同時に、未熟な自分に気づいた分だけ成長したことをも示しているのだろう。逆説的だが、自分の無知を悟ったときにこそ、今日の私は昨日の私より賢くなっていると言えるのだ。まだまだ知らない世界があることを知る、きっとこれが学ぶということであり、その営みには終わりがないのだろう。

We often feel ashamed of our ignorance and stupidity in the past, however, this also indicates, at the same time, that we have grown as much as we realize our own immaturity. Paradoxically speaking, it is only when we realize our ignorance that we can say that what we are today becomes wiser than what we were yesterday. Knowing that there is still a world we don't know is, surely, the very learning itself, and there is no end to the activity of learning.
