夕方英会話スクールに行くとキッズとその母親の姿が目につく。スタッフに聞くとそんなキッズたちがスクールの収益源となっているらしい。

 

公立の小学校の３年生から６年生に英語教育が必須化されたのが2020年度だそうで、今年で５年目となるようだ。

 

 

市内の名門の私立小・中学校では、私が幼い頃から小学生に英語教育を行っていた。大学時代の友人の一人がその小・中学校出身だが確かに英語が強かった。大学卒業後、彼は大手総合商社に就職したが、今頃どうしているのか。音信が途絶えたままになっている。

 

 

以下の、ちょっと昔の神戸大学の問題は「公立小学校での英語教育」を正面からテーマとしている。私の考えは問２の解答例に記載した。

 

 

（問題）

次の文章を読んで、問１と問２に答えなさい。

 

公立小学校で英語など教え始めたら、日本から国際人がいなくなります。(1)英語というのは話す手段に過ぎません。国際的に通用する人間になるには、まずは国語を徹底的に固めなければダメです。表現する手段よりも表現する内容を整える方がずっと重要なのです。(2)英語はたどたどしくても、なまっていてもよい。内容がすべてなのです。そして内容を豊富にするには、きちんと国語を勉強すること、とりわけ本を読むことが不可欠なのです。

If they start teaching English in public elementary schools, all international people will disappear from Japan. (1) English is just a means of speaking. In order to become an internationally acceptable person, you first need to study Japanese language thoroughly. It’s far more important to arrange the content than the means of expression. (2) Speaking hesitant or dialectal English doesn’t matter. What is important is the content itself. And, in order to enrich the content, it is essential to study Japanese language properly, especially to read books.

 

問２

Indeed English is just a means of speaking, but it is important for children to experience English world. Of course, it is important to study Japanese language, but in order to become an international person, we need to read specialized English books in the future. Therefore, I agree to teaching English in public elementary schools. (55 words)
